How does excessive growth of algae affect the growth of coral?

Algae will overgrow on a coral blocking sunlight to the symbiotic zooxanthellae in the coral tissue as well as block the polyps from expanding their tentacles outward to capture food. Eventually, the coral will be smothered and die.
