What problems can excessive algae cause in a pond?

Massive amounts of algae can grow in nutrient rich waters blocking light to submerged plants. And the algae can die off in mass, sink to the bottom where bacteria can break it down using all the oxygen in the water. This results in the death of all the oxygen breathing organisms such as fish, insects and other organisms.
