Why are criminal Defense Attorneys allowed to be so rude?

Almost every trial I watch anywhere in the country, the defense attorneys are some of the slimiest, rude, antagonizing people I have ever seen, badgering and berating witnesses and victims to crimes on the stand in court. If the witness or victims respond back in similar fashion, they are admonished by the judge as "hostile", yet the defense attorneys can get away with it..Why?
