Why isn't my fresh water Eel eating?

i have a fresh water Eel and it has eaten before with no problem, and recently it doesnt wanna eat at all and its always upside down on the fish tank. he then swims around with no problem then many more times hes always upside down as he was dead, but hes not. anyone knows why? and is it a good idea to scrape algae off the fish tank?
